Exploring Freedom in Dongducheon by Mika T.

Updated: Oct 6, 2022

On September 22, the American Literature and World Literature students went on a short trip to the “Freedom Peace Protection Museum” in Dongducheon, a city in the Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

I am a sophomore and I also participated in the field trip. When we first arrived at the museum, we were so amazed at the modern technological activities, including the different types of VR choices given to us.

After we got a good look on the second floor, we went up to the third floor to start looking at the exhibition of the Korean war, and how the United Nations supported South Korea during the Korean war. We learned about the role of the United Nations in the Korean war as well as about the role of peace and freedom in the world.

I got a chance to interview our supervisor for the trip, Ms. Pujols, and Alex J, a classmate who also participated in the trip.

Ms. Pujols said it was a pleasure to go on a short trip with a class, and get to see the depth of the Korean war and the important plots and settings that contributed to the Korean war.

Alex said the trip was fun and interesting. He also enjoyed the fact that there were lots of illustrations that demonstrated and showed us what it was like during the Korean war and activities in which we could experience through VR.

It was a pleasure to go on this trip, and I learned so much about human rights - freedom, peace, and protection of human rights.

I had time to reflect and look back at how many young soldiers and families had to give their lives to fight for their families, and how much they suffered throughout the war. It is an honor to live in South Korea today, and without the help of the United Nations, South Korea would not be the complex country it is today.
