It's almost World Culture's Day! By Lucy B.

journalism90

ICSU staff and students have been busy lately as the date for World Culture’s Day quickly approaches. Last school year, ICSU celebrated Korean Culture day, but in order to celebrate all cultures in our student body, administration decided to focus on all cultures around the world.

Staff committee on World Culture’s Day had several meetings to decide the activities, and the committee leader, Mr. McElrath, answered some questions:

How is the planning going?

The planning phase is over, though it was a bit bumpy. Everyone had a lot of great ideas, but we didn't have the time to fit everything in. Something always gets left on the cutting room floor, and it can be hard to choose which things get to stay. That's in the past now, and we're moving forward. All that remains is ironing out the logistics and prepping the materials.

What are some main activities? Could you describe one in detail?

The three main activities we have in mind are creating passports, touring poster exhibitions, and sharing some snacks from around the world. During and after lunch, students will be invited to put together little passport books, and as they visit each classroom, surveying their posters and/or watching presentations, they'll collect little stamps to mark how world-traveled they are. This idea came from Ms. Mackey, and I think it'll be pretty popular.

What is your biggest concern?

My two biggest concerns are managing the flow of students from room to room, being careful that nobody goes overtime, and keeping in touch with the students, each of whom has been charged with creating a poster for the event. Hopefully everyone can bring something to the event, but you never know when something might go wrong, or materials might be in short-supply. I'll be checking in with all my students during the week, and as long as most of them are able to deliver, I'm confident things will go smoothly in the end.

Thank you to Mr. McElrath who responded kindly to the interview questions.

Will the first World Culture’s day go smoothly as the committee expects? The answer will be revealed on September 23, this week Friday.

Stay tuned for more!
